Chicken Policy from Summer 2019 Newsletter
Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get out of Brookhaven North.
News spread fast that the City of Edmond passed ordinances in 2019 to allow residents to apply for permits to keep chickens. I know you’re egg-cited, however, all three plats in Brookhaven North prohibit raising chickens. So, no fowl play here neighbors.
City ordinance in this case does NOT override property covenants. The city website about chicken rules explicitly states that: “This code is not in conflict with any restrictive covenant that may be applicable to any property. If a covenant restricts ownership of chickens, this ordinance does not give authority to ignore the covenant rules. Property owners are responsible for checking with any applicable homeowner’s association to determine neighborhood rules before obtaining a permit.” Source: http://edmondok.com/chickens
If you would like more information about the covenants you agreed to when you bought or leased your property, go here: http://www.brookhavennorth.org/covenants/
I know this is disappointing to some folks. I’m not against chickens, I grew up on a farm and would love to have a few, but not in Brookhaven.
You can brood about this, but please no fowl language.
